The national guidelines for the training of these animals is adhered to as per the UK Association of Chief Police Officers. Our company Dog Detectives Ltd is one of only a handful of UK companies which is licensed to hold 'real' materials such as drugs and explosives for controlled training purposes and all our staff have experience from the armed forces or emergency services.
Sniffer dogs are trained to use their sense of smell which is far superior to that of any human's - estimated to be thousands of times more sensitive. The way in which the dog's olfactory system works, combined with their amazing loyalty and obedience, makes them the ideal detection animal when looking for human remains or controlled substances. Search dogs are vital because they are able to discern one scent from another even when the odours are blended together, or where one is masked by another. This makes trying to trick a sniffer dog extremely difficult because overlaying stronger smells on top will not help hide the contraband. Some experiments have shown that dogs are so sensitive they can detect substances which were present many years previously, which can be vital in the hunt for missing persons or bodies.
